Attracting Clients I Deserve: Abelle Portraits

The web makes learning accessible. I use it as part of my regular training to perfect the mastery of my craft, I follow a number of entrepreneurs and leaders in my industry. I am constantly watching and listening to webinars and podcasts. Like every day. Like all the time.

The other day, while listening to a business webinar, the influential speaker said this: «You attract the clients you deserve.» In other words, you attract clients who are aligned with your energy. This line has stayed with me since.

I struggle with the confidence in the service I provide and the quality of the work I produce for people. I have come to understand that and expect it. I know many artists and soul-preneurs feel the same way because our soul is part and parcel of the service we provide for others. Indeed, portrait photography is my labor of love.

Abelle Portrait and Wedding Photography

These are some of the lovely souls that have come into my life in 2018.

When I read this line over and over again: «You attract the clients you deserve.», I am at a loss for words to express my gratitude toward the clients who come into my studio. All I know is I am one darn-lucky and blessed human being!

Wedding at Maplehurst Manor & Carriage House, Maitland Ontario: as seen by Abelle Photography

These lovebirds exude youthfulness and vitality. They are creative and talented musicians. To photograph them was a treat. This wedding took place at the end of a glorious warm summer. The groom’s last name inspired the peacock theme and the navy and green colour scheme.

The venue is superb. Set on the side of the St-Lawrence Seaway, at the mouth of the Thousand Island in Maitland, Ontario, is Maplehurst Manor and Carriage House: “a magnificent Georgian Style Manor overlooking the beautiful St. Lawrence River.“ The historical manor has a Downton Abbey feel.

The bride revealed her gown to her father before the ceremony. This “Father Reveal“ was very touching.

The couple didn’t wish to see each other before the ceremony for a first look. However, they shared a prayer prior to the ceremony. This was another emotional moment.

Sophia is a brilliant musician and has a voice that is divine. She surprised and treated her family and friends by playing one of her own compositions.

A special thank you to the staff at Homewood Museum in Maitland, Ontario. They gladly let us photograph the couple on the museum’s grounds. It is one of Ontario’s oldest houses that is well worth a visit.

This will not make me seem any younger but… I met Meagan when she was in grade 8. She was a student in the grade 8 math class I taught in another lifetime… when I was just 16. 🙂

Seriously, even back then Meagan was a talented, determined, authentic and elegant young girl. So look at her now. What do you see? I photographed her bridal portraits in Bondville, by Brome Lake.

She and Stefan came to me to document this blissful wedding. They wanted something simple and fun. They wanted a celebration of their love and a party for their loved ones. We scheduled a first look (Scroll way down for information on the what is “First Look”) in Bromont, at the Bromont olympic equestrian park. On that day, the 20th edition of the Quebec Equestrian Games were taking place for the weekend. So amidst a sea of horse trailers and horses and their riders, we set out to photograph that their first look. Look for the crisp September light in some of the mid afternoon shots. I love it.

The wedding ceremony and reception were held down the road at Le Refuge du Mont Gale. That is where I went on most of my end of year school trips when I was in elementary school. Did I mention my high school bus driver, David, was also the horse carriage driver?

I’m grateful to have had the privilege of being surrounded with this much fun, love and positive energy on that day. These two make me want to smile, a lot.

I love Downton Abbey. I love the story and characters and, I will admit, I am smitten by the costumes, dresses and sets. I feel this wedding’s theme and natural elegance remind me of the show, no? I cannot put my finger on which period exactly.

In any event, good looks, energy and kindness definitely played a big role in this beautiful day, held at the Domaine de Dunham, in the Eastern Townships.

Elegant Montreal Wedding by Abelle

L & E tied the knot in front of friends and family at the Ritz Carlton in Montreal. It was a perfect Summer day and the event had a classic and understated elegance feel. The staff at the Ritz were more than friendly and helpful; they helped make our work easier.

After the couple’s first look, we took some time to create and direct images of the lovely couple on busy Sherbrooke Street West. It was obvious to us that for L & E, friends and family were important so we made sure to capture everyone whose name was on the list of special photographs to capture. We continued photographing the friendly and cheerful guests throughout their wedding reception.

More than photographs – Abelle is building connections

Over the years, I’ve never taken the time to acknowledge and be grateful for the words of love I get from clients who often turn into friends. Every year, former clients (weddings, portraits, family, baby, belly photography sessions,…) take time to reach out and send me words of gratitude and thank you cards, not just at Christmas but year round. I am blessed with amazing clients who touch my heart and remind me how lucky I am to be a people and portrait photographer.

Horse Farm Country Chic Wedding: Abelle photographie

Set amidst the mountain range I grew up with: Bromont, Sutton, Iron Hill, Pinnacle…. this beautiful country wedding was gorgeous. From the details, to the dress to the bride and groom, everything spelled simple and timeless elegance. Although the wedding was classic in nature, this young couple were the youngest I’ve photographed in my 15-year career. They knew what they wanted and were very organized and thoughtful. The rainy weather did not slow anyone down. They chose to see each other before the ceremony. We did the first look in the stable and continued the portrait session outside after the rain stopped.

Don’t they look like a royal couple?

My favourite time of the year.

So they took me out to historical Perth, Ontario, about an hour away from Ottawa. With my GPS set properly I made it there ahead of time. I’m new to the province and am falling in love with rural Ontario. The places I get to discover during my travels to photograph couples, babies, bellies and families are exciting and eye opening. I feel like Wayne Rodstad from On the Road Again. 🙂 Back to the photo shoot…

This couple has an eye for photography and came prepared with inspirational images and a mood board to our first meeting. So when we took advantage of the first warm day of Spring to shoot this engagement session, I knew we were in for a treat. It was the greatest. We worked together to get the vision right. The light was a-we-some. Everywhere we went it was nirvana. The light was direct and contrasty at times or soft and diffused at other moments and always perfectly placed. Then we had a short period of time to play with awesome natural backlight. It felt like I was playing with clay and got to do what I wanted. I think I may have heard the heavens signing… Seriously, in my life as a photographer, it is all about great light and great people. Here, I had both!
